For some time now, HTC has promised a more mobile virtual reality solution and now comes in the form of the new Link VR headset. But before you assume that is just another copy of Gear VR here is something to think about – in this case, the smartphone stands outside the headset.

That’s right, HTC U11 performs all the calculations and image processing and sends the video signal over the USB-C connection. The headset has a pair of own displays with a diagonal of 3.6 inches and a 110 degree viewing angle. Their resolution is 1200 x 1080 pixels, and the refresh rate is 90Hz.

Tracking is done by external tracker that is similar to Sony’s PS Move. It is powered by a battery, so there are no annoying wires. The tracking itself should be much more accurate than what Gear VR and Google Daydream offers.

Before you get too excited, you need to know that Link VR will be released in July, and only in Japan, at least at this stage. The other detail is that you can not connect the headset to the PC and use it as a cheaper alternative to HTV Vive.
