In the spring of this year, several rumors have arisen that Apple will start using OLED displays in all of its iPhone models in 2019, but the company seems to have plans to do this much more earlier.

According to Nikkei, the change to this technology will take place in the second half of 2018. Taiwanese analyst company Yutana Investment Consulting confirms this speculation, predicting it expects by the end of 2017 Apple to sell 90 million phones, half of which will use OLED displays.

This means that this autumn, the new flagship model the iPhone 8 will be with such a screen, and from next year the technology will be used for all the variants of the phone. As far as the upcoming iPhone generation is concerned, the company is preparing two more models with LCD displays, which, according to many, will be the latest of its kind. Of course we are talking about iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus.

So if the decision to switch to OLED screens is more or less certain, the only question that remains is whether Apple will be able to get enough of them to meet demand. The main source of this display is expected to be Samsung.

“Samsung Display declined to comment. It is unclear whether Samsung will remain the exclusive OLED supplier in 2018 even though other rivals are still struggling to churn out OLED panels for smartphones. Apple usually prefers more than one supplier for a single component. The two companies are also locked in fierce competition in the global smartphone market.” Wrote Nikkei.
