Google today announced that it intends to create a new research laboratory in China devoted entirely to artificial intelligence.

Google already has similar facilities in New York, Toronto, London and Zurich, and the Chinese lab will be the first such Google investment in Asia. It will attract local talent from across the region and conduct “basic AI research” in a number of areas.

“Focused on basic AI research, the Center will consist of a team of AI researchers in Beijing, supported by Google China’s strong engineering teams. We’ve already hired some top experts, and will be working to build the team in the months ahead (check our jobs site for open roles!).

Along with Dr. Jia Li, Head of Research and Development at Google Cloud AI, I’ll be leading and coordinating the research. Besides publishing its own work, the Google AI China Center will also support the AI research community by funding and sponsoring AI conferences and workshops, and working closely with the vibrant Chinese AI research community.” Says the official Google blog.

This is a really interesting development for Google, though its services are not available in China. The company was forced to stop its services in China few years ago, and now slowly restores her presence.

This AI Lab will help Google build links with the local business as well as show the Chinese government that its resources can still be used for good. Google’s new lab will face fierce competition to attract AI researchers from local giants like Tencent, Baidu, and Alibaba. Source: Google Blog
