What has long been expected has become a reality today. Google has announced that the next version of Android has the delicious name Oreo. The software, which has been available for several months in its beta version, will appear in its final version by the end of this year.

Oreo is actually Android 8.0, which follows the current version of Nougat. Google use the most interesting moment to announce the official name of the new version of the operating system. The premiere coincided with the full eclipse of the sun, which had the chance to experience a small part of the US population.

It was at the moment the moon stood between Earth and the Sun, the software giant presented the statue of Android Oreo, located on Manhattan’s 14th Street Park. The Oreo name might be the most interesting feature of Android 8.0 we’re learning about today, but there are some notable updates that will make it worth updating if and when it eventually makes it way to your devices.

The update to Oreo will be available by the end of the year for phones from Samsung, Sony, Essential, Huawei, HTC, LG and Motorola. For Google devices, this will happen much sooner, though there is no exact date yet. Among the first to be able to experience the final version of Oreo are the Pixel, Nexus 5X and 6P phones.

Google adds that they are working hard to get the devices of other companies to get the new version before the end of this year. So far, the time to update phones that don’t use pure Android was between a few months and a half.

Android 7.0 Nougat, the last major version of the Google’s OS which came out a year ago, is only installed on about 14% of the Android phones. So while we finally know what the “O” stands for, the wait for the new OS isn’t over yet.
