The Chinese supercomputer Sunway TaihuLight retains its first position among the world’s highest-performing supercomputers, according to the new TOP500 rating, which is updated twice a year.

The total performance of all systems in the list increased by 32% to 749 petaflops. As in the previous release, the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer is unattainable at the top, with a huge lead over competitors.

In the Linpack test, the Chinese machine reach a score of 93 petaflops. The second place also belongs to the Chinese supercomputer the Tianhe-2 machine with a score of 33.9 petaflops. Tianhe-2 was a leader in the TOP500 for three years, but in 2016 TaihuLight take over.

Third in the rating is the supercomputer Piz Daint (Cray XC50) operated in Switzerland. Through the upgrade, the system receive the Nvidia Tesla P100 accelerators and increased its performance from 9.8 to 19.6 petaflops to climb five places in the leaderboard.

The most powerful American computer Titan (Cray XK7) went down to fourth place with a score of 17.6 petaflops. Next is another US machine – Sequoia (IBM BlueGene / Q), which achieves 17.2 petaflops performance.

The United States, however, leads the number of supercomputers in the TOP500. The American machines in the rating are 169, and the second is China with 160 systems. Followed by Japan with 33 supercomputers, Germany with 28 and France and United Kingdom with 17 machines.

Most supercomputers run on Intel processors – there are 464 of all 500 machines. Accelerators come into the configurations of 91 supercomputers, most often Nvidia GPUs, according to statistics.

“With the two Chinese supercomputers and one Swiss system occupying the top of the rankings, this is the second time in the 24-year history of the TOP500 list that the United States has failed to secure any of the top three positions. The only other time this occurred was in November 1996, when three Japanese systems captured the top three spots.” Source: Top500
