Apple uses artificial intelligence technology in its Siri voice assistant, but now the company is looking to enhance the AI hardware with its own chip. Bloomberg said Apple is developing a dedicated mobile chip that will perform artificial intelligence tasks. Currently, similar tasks are assigned to the central CPU and GPU processors.

The project is known inside the company as Apple Neural Engine. It is expected the new chip to deliver faster and more accurate processing of tasks such as face recognition and speech recognition.

In addition to higher CPU and GPU performance, the dedicated chip will provide longer autonomous performance for the Apple devices, and this would be a major advantage over the rest of the competitors.

Apple, of course, is not the only company to realize the benefits of specialized hardware in solving artificial intelligence tasks. Qualcomm’s single-chip systems (SoC), the well-known Snapdragon processors, also integrate AI features.

The biggest player on the stage of AI Google earlier announced that is developing such hardware, but it is not designed for mobile devices. Similar products are in the portfolio of the Nvidia graphics. Other, less well-known companies are also focusing on this area.

Apple has its own AR team with hundreds of engineers working on AR-related features. In March, Bloomberg reported that the team is headed by Mike Rockwell, who previously ran the hardware and new technologies groups at Dolby. Rockwell is reporting to Dan Riccio, head of the iPhone and iPad hardware engineering groups.

Apple has a secret team that works on Virtual Reality Device

Apple’s interest on Augmented Reality makes sense. Recently the company has made several large AR-focused acquisitions, including PrimeSense and FlyBy, the maker of AR-camera software. Apple CEO Tim Cook has called AR a better technology than VR and for everyone, not just a niche market. Source: Bloomberg
