According to new information from DigiTimes, Apple will use a new optical technology for the fingerprint sensor to embed a Touch ID into the OLED panel. EDN cites the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) as the source of the information.

TSMC also produces Apple’s new A11 processor, which will undoubtedly come with this year’s iPhone 8. So far, fingerprint sensor technology built into the screen could not be applied on a large scale.

But it seems that engineers have found a way to produce a large number of OLED screens with a built-in fingerprint sensor. According to earlier rumors, the iPhone 8 will have an end-to-end screen similar to the Infinity screen of the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Other design changes mentioned by sources at TSMC suggest additional biometric authentication such as iris/facial recognition which could be used to augment Touch ID via a high pixel-density front-facing camera, which is expected to feature next-generation 3D-sensing capabilities powered by PrimeSense technology.

The iPhone 8 version will be postponed for 2018

The report also claims the screen ratio of the displays on the new iPhones will be adjusted to 18.5:9 instead of the previous 16:9. The “iPhone 8” is thought to have a redesigned steel and glass chassis and could carry a “premium” price, compared to previous models.
