Lauren Kern, editor of New York Magazine, was selected as Apple’s first editor-in-chief, Politico said. It is not clear what exactly the editor’s role will be in this case, but the position suggests that Apple has greater ambitions for the service offered for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Kern declined to comment on the story, and Apple did not confirm the assignment. Because Apple News is not a traditional news service, Kern will probably deal with the selection of news which will reach the readers.

In February, one of Apple’s top executives Eddy Cue said that the company wants to make sure that news providers at Apple News are “legitimate”.
