Qualcomm has sent invitations for a upcoming presentation, the center of which will be the new Snapdragon 660 SoC. The new chipset will be used mostly in mid range smartphones.

The new Snapdragon 660 will be the successor to the excellent performer Snapdragon 652, but now is getting much closer to the flagship processors of the company.

The model will use a 8-core processor with Kryo 280 kernel, as in the current top model Snapdragon 835. In contrast, however, the Snapdragon 660 will be made at a 14 nm process rather than at 10 nm. However, the current Apple A10 and Kirin 960 are based on a 16 nm process.

It is also speculated that Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC will have support for UFS 2.1 storage, LTE Cat.10, camera up to 24MP resolution and have two LPDDR4 RAMs clocked at 1866MHz. As far as the graphics is concerned, the chipset is speculated to arrive with Adreno 512 GPU and would include support for dual-channel LPDDR4X-1866 memory.

The graphics accelerator Adreno 512 is slower than the Adreno 540, but it is not yet known with how much.

The event is scheduled for May 9, and the first phones expected to use Snapdragon 660 are Nokia 7 and 8, Xperia X Ultra and Xiaomi Mi Max.
