BlackBerry announced a new licensing deal that aims to provide devices for more than a billion people in India and neighboring markets. The news comes just four months after the Canadian company stopped to produce smartphones and reorient the software. Its first deal was to give license to the joint venture BB Merah Putih selling phones in Indonesia, where traditionally the brand sold a lot.

In December BlackBerry grant such a license, to TCL Communication for the world. The new deal with Indian telecom Optiemus Infracom, was given designs, manufactures, sells, promotes and supports devices with BlackBerry brand in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.

“Our exclusive partnership with BlackBerry, a brand synonymous with secure mobile communications, shows how we are continuing to partner and innovate to bring the latest in handset design and experience, combining the security of BlackBerry and versatility of Android, to our customers in the world’s fastest growing smartphone market,” says Mr. Ashok Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom.

“With our strong end to end play in the mobile ecosystem in manufacturing, retail, distribution and support, we are confident that our journey with BlackBerry will be a long and successful one.”

“This is a market of over 1.5 billion people, many of whom have never owned a smartphone,” said Alex Thurber, head of the mobile division of BlackBerry. The company will continue to provide security patches for the devices.
