Thanks to the official press release today it became clear that one of the most innovative smartphone companies Nextbit Systems Inc. was acquired by Razer – the company producing computer peripherals and gaming PCs.

According to the press release Razer “has acquired most of the assets of Nexbit, the board of directors and employees have gone to the new company.” No financial details of the acquisition was released, but the deal was finalized Friday, January 27, 2017.

Nextbit, which was founded by former members of the Android team at Google and former head of design at HTC, will remain largely independent company acting as an “independent business unit under its own management,” according to the press release.

CEO of Nextbit Tom Moss said that “the whole team” will remain and that the deal will give the company more resources for development. Nextbit employees will continue to work in their existing offices in San Francisco and later will be merged with those of Razer.

Moss said Nextbit “will continue its mission to cross boundaries and do great things in the mobile segment.” It is likely to see new hardware and software at some point, but Moss did not provide any details about the future plans of the company.

As you know, Nextbit has a smartphone called Robin, which was made possible thanks to funding campaign on Kickstarter. He has a unique design, software and unlimited storage in the cloud. Moss said that Nextbit will continue to deliver software updates’s Robin for another year.

Razer will provide six months warranty on the hardware, though the smartphone is running low. Robin will receive an update to Android 7.0 Nougat this Thursday, which will bring improvements in battery consumption.

For Razer, Nextbit is another purchase after last year it acquired audio technology company THX. We shall see what new things will create a combined company. Perhaps we will witness the Razer smartphone? What do you think?
