BlackBerry Priv was the first device of the company with the operating system Google Android, and this year we expect two more smartphones in the market to follow same fashion. Last month came the rumor that the company may abandon the BlackBerry 10 platform and remain only with Android, but they were quickly denied by the company.

But now the senior director for Asia Pacific Product Management, Mr Damian Tay confirmed that Android will become the main platform for the BlackBerry in the future.

“The Priv device is essentially our transition to Android ecosystem. As we secure Android, over a period of time, we would not have two platforms, and may have only Android as a platform “for smartphones”,” Damian Tay, senior director, APAC product management at BlackBerry, told ET. “But for now, we have BB10 and Android platforms for our smartphones.”, he said.

He explained that the company will continue to sell BB10 devices for governments and institutions, but the long-term strategy includes Android as the primary operating system on smartphones for end users.
