More sources claim that Apple is about to move to OLED displays – in the beginning for smaller display devices and later for all of its devices. The technology has significant advantages over LCD, but is more expensive and difficult to manufacture, and of course Samsung had a huge part of the market. Apple seeks to reduce its dependence from the Korean company for several years and it is not surprising that the company is working on its own OLED display.

Bloomberg reports that Apple has opened a small laboratory with about 50 engineers in Taiwan, part of which comes from AU Optronics and Qualcomm. Still we know very little about the focus of their work, but the phase in which Apple is now guarantee that we will have to wait at least another year before we see the first results of the transition.

The abilities for turning off the black pixels on the displays is crucial for battery life in smaller devices, especially Apple Watch.
