Turkish government blocked the access of Reddit on its territory. The ban is possible under the law for the Internet 5651, which allows the police to block sites that supposedly contained “scandalous” content. In the last definition includes digital piracy, pornography and criticism of Turkey’s first president, Mustafa Atatürk.

Many users have already discovered an easy way to circumvent the ban – access to Reddit can be restored by changing the DNS settings. More worrying are the reasons for imposing the measure. If the real motives of the government were spreading piracy and pornography, the site probably would be blocked in 2007, when the 5651 law enters into force. More likely, the administration of the Turkish president Recep Erdogan is trying to silence another social channel with a strong influence in times of political crises.
