The social network Twitter must keep data for Russian users in Russia, according to the roskomnadzor. Russian Internet regulator has said several months ago that he would not make such a request to Twitter, because according to them, the social network does not collect data.

Ultimately Roscomnadzor changed its position.

“Several months ago, Twitter has changed the conditions for consumers – after reading this you will understand that already have to provide metadata. For us it is equal to the personal data by which to identify the person,” said the head of roskomnadzor Alexandre Jarov told the Financial Times.

In Russia there is a law obliging foreign and Russian companies to retain and process the personal information of Russian citizens in the country. Data are according to the text “any information relating directly or indirectly to or determinable individual person.”

Roskomnadzor waiting for a response and from Facebook – the social network also must be “stored” data for Russian consumers in Russia. If companies refuse to obey can follow a fine and possible blocking of social networks in the country.

Some analysts says that the chances Roscomnadzor to impose the maximum penalty for the moment are not great. Russia is not the only country that requires social networks to retain data about their users in their territory.

In connection with the agreement on the exchange of data between the US and the EU, Microsoft has committed itself not to keep information about its European customers in the United States – for now the company will store data in the “cloud” servers in Germany.
