Microsoft HoloLens available to developers in early 2016, for $3,000
After a series of rumors and interesting information “leaks” Today Microsoft introduced new products and delight consumers with numerous surprises. The main figure in the press conference was Terry Myerson, head of the division Windows and Devices. In the beginning it took some time to share with the audience just how well does the Windows 10 – the latest version of the operating system, which made its premiere at the end of July.
According to his data over 110 million devices work with Windows 10 and above 650 billion pages were viewed in the new browser Microsoft Edge. Myerson continued with interesting figures – the owners of Xbox are streaming 120 years of content to Windows 10 devices and voice assistant Cortana has received more than 1 billion question. Interesting, but the most exciting are the new devices that will take full advantage of the new version of the latest operating system.
Well, the presentation started with something familiar – HoloLens. Augmented reality glasses of Microsoft differ from the competition as successfully combine virtual reality with real and physical environment. After more than an exciting presentation, from Microsoft announced something very important – the gadget will be available for purchase from developers in the first quarter of next year. The price is more than impressive – $3,000. It seems that Microsoft wants to really build a quality product, as any developer who wants to buy HoloLens, will have to pass through “interview” to be able to take the product. Thus the company will be sure willing to seek the best result of his work with the glasses for augmented reality.
Microsoft has not mentioned exactly how many units will be marketed, nor what qualities to look for in developers. We note that to work with HoloLens no need any connection to the PC, or to the phone – this is a competitive advantage. During the presentation it was presented the game Project X Ray. This is a title that can be played in any room, and the walls of the room are part of the game-play – they show the evil aliens that player has to shoot. It’s impressive the fact that “bad aliens” clearly distinguish what is furniture and use it for cover.
Although Microsoft comes later in this category (when the company released the numbers to developers, other companies will go on sale with final products), Microsoft is positioning its product in another category. Microsoft thinking about a future in which the real world will connect with the virtual and this will be of help to many professionals, but will also provide exciting gaming experiences. An interesting product, but its development has just begun.
