Soon the capacity of semiconductor drives (SSD, or even SSDs) will reach a whopping 128 terabytes (TB), promised from Toshiba representative at the forum SEMI Members Day Tokyo.

“SSD is expected to overtake even a classic capacity hard drives (HDD)”, claims Nobuo Hayasaka, chief engineer of the division Semiconductor & Storage in a Japanese company.

Currently, the maximum capacity on the HDD format 3.5 inches is 10 terabytes. It is expected that by 2020 the capacity of hard drives will grow to 20-40 terabytes.

For comparison, SSD of the same format already reach 16 TB. Next year will increase capacity to 32 TB, in the 2017th – up to 64 TB, and then another year will double to 128 terabytes.
