One of the most expensive components of supercomputers is the high-speed RAM. A team at MIT is working on technology that will allow the replacement of RAM with a simple flash memory, without serious degradation.

Scientists have built a small working server farm that uses flash memory controllers for calculations and does not include any RAM. The comparison with standard supercomputers shows that productivity is lower, but the difference is negligible for less demanding needs. 20 server 20 TB flash memory as fast as 40 server 10 TB RAM, but the cost is significantly lower.

Of course, the new concept is not suitable for all types of tasks. It deals with an array of search results, but not particularly effective for complex calculations.
